Bintulu is a coastal town located in between Sibu and Miri in Sarawak. It is about midway between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu and is the fourth largest town in Sarwak after Kuching, Miri and Sibu. At the current development pace, Bintulu may rise in ranking soon.
Bintulu is a major centre for the oil and gas industry, well-known not only in Malaysia, but also globally. To quote Wikipedia: “The Petronas Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Complex is currently the world’s largest liquefied natural gas production facility on a single site, with an annual production of 23 million tonnes.” The Kidurong area, just 15 kilometers from the town centre is home, not only the Petronas LNG Complex, but also Asean Bintulu Fertilizer plant and Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis plant.
Samalaju Industrial Park, 62 km from Bintulu, a part of SCORE and within the Bintulu district, is being developed as a centre for heavy and energy intensive industries, drawing power from the abundant hydroelectric power generated. More information can be obtained from RECODA website at www.recoda.com.my. RM28 billion in investments is reported to be committed by the current five active and producing investors. Samalaju Industrial Park will be the manufacturing base (other than Kidurong) for the Bintulu district that will propel Bintulu’s economy to greater heights in a stable and growing manner. The output from the investors will contribute more than RM10 billion to the GNI yearly.
